Ex- FBI director James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the answer representing him in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer declared he would try to have the case dismissed for several factors including that his client, a critic of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was charged shortly after the former president pressured his attorney general to proceed against him.

Court Developments

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald advised the court they aimed to file various legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, arguing the government's case was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully appointed to take over the case.

James Comey's case was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from Trump after his examination into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey came across in good spirits as he came into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the judge read his rights and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he told the judge.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into the former president's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director caused a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were never brought, leading to negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

The federal government allege Mr Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the Senate by stating he had not approved someone at the FBI to disclose to news outlets information about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and slow" the committee by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

In a video the former director published to his online platform after he was charged, he declared he was not guilty and charged Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have understood for years that there are consequences to challenging the former president," he stated. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "So let's have a court case."

These allegations against Mr Comey came after Trump posted on online platforms calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and others.
