Texas State University has terminated the enrollment of an attendee who allegedly reenacted the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk during a university event this week.
A widely circulated video captures the individual in the assembly slapping his neck repeatedly, referring to himself as “Charlie Kirk”, and imitating the events leading to Kirk’s fatal shooting.
“Charlie Kirk got hit in the neck, b---h,” the individual remarks in the footage.
During the video, the person is shown mounting a monument and simulating collapse as if attacked.
Greg Abbott, a Republican, reposted the video and demanded the student’s expulsion.
“Such behavior is not permitted at our schools,” he declared. “Dismiss this student immediately. Imitating violence must have repercussions.”
Administrative head Kelly Damphousse released a message calling the video as “disturbing” and confirming it was filmed on campus.
“Conduct that mocks or glorifies violence is unacceptable and opposes the values of our university,” he stated. “Expressions that make light of violence are prohibited on our campuses.”
Shortly after, officials stated that the student had been identified and was expelled.
These events mirrors a related case at Texas Tech University, where a student was also expelled after showing disrespect at a vigil for the commentator.
In recent weeks, multiple people across different industries have faced consequences over remarks related to the tragedy.
Government agencies are allegedly examining numerous of complaints against educators accused of making inappropriate remarks on social media.
Advocacy organizations have denounced the investigations, referring to them as a “political witch hunt” aimed at suppressing free speech.
“These measures into teachers expressing their First Amendment rights suppress voices and promote the purging of educators,” a release said.
The controversy remains ongoing regarding the tension between individual speech and respect for victims in the wake of tragic events.
