The England head coach expressed his regret that the Three Lions team did not get more encouragement from the home spectators during their impressive triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was pleased to see his side continue their good form, with finishes from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the contest. However, he was unhappy with the mood at the national stadium.
“With limited sessions to prepare against a drilled team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel commented. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the additional goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you deliver in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s regrettable because the team warranted more support today.”
“I support this statement. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a little more backing in periods where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to refocus, but that’s the way it went and that is it.”
Apart from risking a fight with supporters, the manager also created controversy by excluding Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. Yet the move was justified by Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel explained. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his position.”
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who host Belgium in a key qualifying match on Monday, learn from their awful first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this game,” Bellamy commented. “I need to see where we are. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? Today gives me motivation.”
Watkins was substituted at the break after clattering into a goalpost and is a concern when England play their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
