Donald Trump’s family business accelerated its recruitment of overseas employees on short-term work permits this year, while his administration was placing obstacles for other companies wanting to do the same, an analysis released Thursday claimed.
According to data from the federal labor department, the Trump Organization sought to hire at least 184 overseas employees in the coming year for short-term roles at the US president’s Florida property, golf facilities and his Virginia winery.
The number of applications for temporary work visas for workers including waitstaff, clerks, cleaning staff, culinary employees and farm workers was the highest ever filed by the company, and increased from 121 in 2021, when his presidency ended.
It was also the fifth instance in 10 years that Trump had sought to hire over a hundred foreign employees for seasonal jobs at Mar-a-Lago, based on labor statistics.
The disclosure comes amid a crackdown on immigration laws by his administration that has involved the introduction of a $100,000 fee on H1-B visas; increased review of the actions of the millions of people who already hold American work permits; and restrictive new rules for international scholars and reporters.
In total, the business sought to hire over 560 foreign laborers over the five years the former president has been in the White House, from his first term and during 2025.
Notably, the former president was questioned by some in the GOP this week for comments defending the necessity for overseas employees when a company was unable to find people with “specific talents” to fill particular roles.
“You cannot just say a nation is coming in, going to spend billions to build a facility, and going to take people off an jobless roster who haven’t worked in years, and they’re going to start making their defense systems. It isn’t feasible that effectively,” he stated to a interviewer after it was implied that overseas employees lower the wages of US workers.
The administration declined a request for response, and the Trump Organization did not provide an answer to an inquiry.
