The UK Foreign Office has added an additional eleven more countries to its travel warning roster about the threats of methanol contamination from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
The expanded travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the number of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only recently, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following multiple notable events like the fatal death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or death within 12–48 hours.
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not intended for ingestion.
Although it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.
But in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Authorities representative Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.
"While drinking spirits overseas, opt for reputable establishments and avoid homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.
"In case something feels off, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than typical or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."
The complete list of destinations listed as posing a risk of industrial alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
