Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and gamers have found plenty of interesting indie games. Yet, one stands out for its unconventional concept. Called Unko Technica, this classic-feel side-scrolling game includes a protagonist that is actually a dung striving to travel to a restroom. For those curious, "Unko" means "poop."
Player controls is easy to grasp: just use a one button to leap. Throughout numerous challenges, encounter boss fights and visit a store to buy outfits for your poop character.
Time your actions precisely, since one error means restarting the level. Bounce off air pockets to propel your character upward, navigate crumbling platforms, and activate buttons to unlock new areas. Earn coins and use them on tougher levels where things gets crazy.
Graphically, the game features neon level designs and catchy music score. Its minimalist art featuring morphing abstract forms may remind players of beloved games like Earthbound.
Although tough to think of similar titles where you play as a piece of feces, gaming frequently included toilet humor. For instance, in Death Stranding, you can craft grenades from protagonist waste. Titles such as Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize manure as soil enrichment. Unsurprisingly, such content appears heavily in Obsidian's South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its humorous concept, Unko Technica has already earned significant accolades, like being named best at Bandai Namco's game competition in 2023. A playable preview is accessible currently on Steam, with the final release set to arrive on computers in the fall.
